CONSERVATION
WORK IN KENYA & EAST AFRICA.
East Africa is the pre-eminent home to birds and
wildlife. Think of a region that
embraces the largest land mammals (the African elephants)… the largest
predators (Lions, Chetaahs, African hunting dogs, Hyenas, Leopards ).....the
higher primates (Gorrillas, chimpanzees)….. the now rare African species of rhino
(Black rhinocerous).....and species like hippopotamus, giraffe that seem
incomparatable to anything else on earth.
The
mystique of East Africa's wildlife however, it
is not in its large photogenic species, but also in the diverse birds (weavers, widowbirds,
barbets, bishops)….. reptiles, insects trees, plants….. I myself have have worked,
researched and traveled widely here, but I have seen only a fraction of East Africa's natural
wonders.
When
Mbango Safaris was formed we
had a simple objective; to share, experience and enjoy the
birdlife, wildlife and natural wonders of East Africa with our
clients which we have protected and helping to protect for future generations.
As
we celebrate Mbango safaris fourth anniversary, its appropriate to pause and
evaluate the results of four years of doing safaris, efforts and dedication
devoted in helping to conserve East Africa’s
magnificent birdlife, wildlife and wild lands.
There
have been losses to be sure. Birdlife and wildlife habitat continues to
shrink, but if Mbango Safaris and other conservation groups had not been active
there would have been much more damage. For instance, it was predicted that the
wildebeest population will decrease due to the snaring onslaught and virtually
there will be no wildebeest migration between Serengeti and Maasai mara. That
hasn’t happened. Infact, their numbers are actually rising. Even the Mountain
Gorillas population is inching up despite the genocide in Rwanda and ongoing war in
Democratic Republic of Congo. So, while we mourn the loss of birdlife and
wildlife due to snaring and habitat loss, we at Mbango Safaris in many cases
have been able to help in slowing, stopping and even reserving the slide of
flora and fauna towards extinction.
Any
enthusiastic traveler to East Africa’s parks
and reserves has savored the joys of one or more East African safari. With
that Mbango safaris founders recognized the inextricable link between
conservation and tourism.
Our
goal is to help in protection of the largest percentage of East Africa’s birdlife /wildlife that lives both inside and
outside national parks and reserves. One of the ways we do that is funding of
projects through Mbango Safaris Conservation Fund (MSCF) where US $ 50 of
every tour sign up goes towards conservation. The other way is by helping local
communities establish business enterprises that will promote birdlife and
wildlife conservation while generating economic benefits.
Thanks
to these innovative program as communities living near national parks and
reserves are seeing birdlife and wildlife in new more favorable light; a
positive passport to economic opportunities for themselves and their
communities and when people are friendly to wildlife, it thrives!
Today Mbango Safaris has proven experience in East Africa,
well designed tours plans and outstanding
staff and small bound of conservation project which we support through the conservation fund.
As well tell our story to an ever widening circle
of conservation minded tour groups and individuals, were are confident that the
necessary support will be forth coming. To continue with our crucial
conservation support work into the next century, you must sign up in one of our
tours as US $50 for every sign-up goes to our conservation program.
Our deepest appreciation to everyone who supported
us for the last four years. Thanks for signing for the tours, with that Mbango
Safaris is able to strengthen and extend its efforts to support the protection
of East Africa’s birds and wildlife
and their habitats. While word don’t say it all, know that we at Mbango
Safaris are very much grateful to each and every tour participant.
