Although Ethiopia's rich cultural heritage may be the focus, the sheer, breathtaking beauty of Ethiopia scenery overwhelmes your senses and embeds itself in your mind's eye. Every journey is a visual feast.

The spectacular highland are heaven for endemic and endangered species such as the Simien Wolf, the Gelada Baboon and the spectacular Lammergeyer.

The Simien and the Bale mountain ramges are rich in Flora and Fauna with spectacular views, their crags and peaks soaring to over 4000 meters. This is some of the best scenery and the world's finest trails for walking safaris.

Day 1: Lake Langano. Drive to Lake Langano. Lunch, dinner and overnight at Bishangari Lodge.

Day 2 - 4: Bale Mountains National Park. This morning we have an early start to the 2,400 sq km Bale Mountains National Park, the largest area of Afro-alphine habitat in the whole of Africa.

Although no doubt long and tiring, the drive to the Bale Mountains is both scenic and ornithologically exciting. Climbing through forests, fields, little villages and banana groves, we reach open grassy uplands where Blue-winged Geese, Rouget's Rails and Abyssinian Longclaws introduce us to the long list of Ethiopian endemics to be found in the area. Approaching the park the scenery becomes increasingly spectacular. Magnificient forests cling to the sides of deep valleys and high peaks, rocky outcrops, pinnacles and ridges pierce horizons, and moorlands, grasslands and peaty pools sit in plains and hollows. Entering the park we should start to watch out for mammals such as the endemic Mountain Nyala (a magnificient antelope unique to these hills), Common Duiker, Bohor Reedbuck and Menelik's Bushbuck whilst Warthog may be seen as forest margins.

We will then drive on through the Park to Goba, a small town amongst agricultural lands on the Park's edge. Here we will check in to the Goba Wabe Shebelle Hotel, our base for the next three nights.

Days 5 & 6: Sodere. Drive to Sodere to search the Hamadryas Baboon, Sommering Gazelle and Wild Ass along banks of the Awash River. Good birding with some 9 endemics to be seen in the grounds. Lunch, dinner and overnights at Sodere Wabe Shabelle Hotel.

Days 7: After breakfast we leave Sodere and drive back to Addis Ababa. Overnight at Sheraton Hotel.

Explore beyond:
As you will appreciate, our week in Ethiopia is short and action packed! Inevitably there are many other interesting places to visit in Ethiopia should you have more time. As majority of your holiday cost is spent on airfare, we should strongly recommend an extension to your holiday by three, five or seven nights (as Ethiopia Airline fly from Addis to Europe every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday) or even longer.

A short domestic flight to the north will open up such exciting areas as Lake Tana, the Blue Nile Gorge, the source of the Blue Nile, Gondar and the unique rock-hewn churches of Lalibela. Alternatively, visit some additional national parks or extra wildlife and bird watching sites around the country. Please contact us to discuss the different possibilities and ask for quotes.

Weather. The rainy season in Ethiopia usually runs from June untill early October. Therefore, dry and sunny weather should be expeccng ourcs which take place in the dry season (although there are often so called 'short rains' in March / April). The tours in November are likely to encounter a greener countryside than those in the year. Daytime temparatures range from 20 degrees centigrade to low  3 degrees centigrade (cooler in the mountains), so the climate is comfortably warm. Cloud is likely in the afternoon and although the lowlands are usually dry at this season it can rain in the mountains and be cold at night. A list of clothing is included in the pre-departure information.

Food & accommodation included in the price. All meals and accommodation are included in the tour price. You should be aware that there are no luxury lodges in Ethiopia. We use the best comfortable accommondation at each site, but this is generally of very simple standard and restaurant food is basic but adequate.

Entry requirements. Certain nationals do require visas in order to enter Ethiopia. The current visa price per person is 12 pounds

Extra expenses: Please note that we do not include the following in the cost of this holiday: all items of a personal nature, such as drinks, souvenirs, laundry, tips, e.t.c.

Tour grading. This is a straighforward wildlife tour, with emphasis on seeing Ethiopia's endemic species, that makes no special physical demands, and should be well within the capabilities of anyone of any age who enjoys travel in third World countries.

However, in order to cover as wide range of habitats in a short time, this tour does include regular long drives, together with early starts and some late arrivals at hotels.

Please note: If you are wanting a hotel tour of high standards and luxury travel, then this may not be the trip for you - however, if you enjoy travel in third world countries and want an excellent standard of wildlife and bird watching amongst friendly people and great landscape, then you will love Ethiopia.
